DFR is the only bicycle powered direct distribution food rescue program in Denver! Direct distribution (from food donor to food recipient) ensure that highly perishable fresh foods make it to our community partners quickly. This model not only gets the healthiest of foods to neighborhoods that experience barriers to fresh produce but also reduces food waste saving more good food from the landfill. Other models of food rescue typically transport donations to a warehouse and then send it back out to recipients and pantries. While this method is good for shelf stable products, the additional transportation step may come between fresh healthy foods and a family’s home.
? DFR currently operates 3 food rescue programs

1. DFR Food Rescue: DFR currently partners with over 50 retailers such as grocery stores, wholesale distributors, and farmers markets to provide regular food rescue services focused on fresh edible produce and highly perishable items that would otherwise end up in landfills. Typically these donations go to support our weekly No Cost Grocery Programs around the city.
2. Copia: DFR has partnered with Copia, a tech-enabled food recovery organization, to seamlessly connect businesses who have surplus food to those who need it on demand. Copia’s technology allows food donors to track surplus, use data and analytics to reduce waste at the source, and see the real time environmental and community impacts their donations have. Rescued Copia food is distributed to organizations serving food insecure individuals.
3. Fresh Food Connect: In 2015 DFR partnered with Groundwork Denver and Denver Urban Gardens to create a web-app that brings local produce to our No Cost Grocery Programs and provides jobs to low-income youth. If you are a home or community gardener in 80203, 80205, 80207, 80210 or 80220 DFR will come right to your doorstep to pick up your garden grown produce and share it with community based organizations addressing food access in their neighborhoods!
