Food Recovery

Powered by Volunteers, Fueled by Impact

At Denver Food Rescue (DFR), our innovative food recovery model combines sustainability, community, and volunteer power to address food insecurity in Denver.

Our Impact So Far:

🥬 5.2 million pounds of fresh food recovered

🌎 4,200+ tons of methane emissions prevented

🚲 1.3 million miles traveled sustainably with e-cargo bikes

Here’s How We Do It

Recovering Fresh, Nutritious Food

Every day, our dedicated volunteers collect surplus food from over 30 grocery stores, wholesalers, and farmers markets across Denver. This includes fresh produce, dairy, and other nutrient-dense perishables that might otherwise go uneaten.

Fast, Direct Impact

Through our Direct Distribution model, recovered food is delivered within two hours of collection, ensuring families receive high-quality, fresh items. This efficiency guarantees that nutritious food reaches the people who need it most—quickly, sustainably, and with dignity.

Sustainable Distribution

By using e-cargo bikes whenever possible, we reduce carbon emissions while delivering food directly to our community-led No Cost Grocery Programs (NCGPs). This sustainable approach helps us tackle food insecurity and environmental harm simultaneously.

Volunteers Make It Possible

Our volunteers are the heart of this work. They’re the ones biking through neighborhoods, picking up fresh food, and delivering it directly to community spaces. Their passion and commitment help us provide the equivalent of 450,000 meals annually, saving Denver families nearly $3 million in grocery costs every year.

Building a More Equitable Future

In addition to feeding families, our model diverts food from landfills, reducing the environmental impact of food waste. Every mile biked, every delivery made, and every volunteer shift strengthens our vision of a more equitable and sustainable food system.

Join us in creating a healthier, more connected Denver. Whether you volunteer, donate, or spread the word, you’re helping to build a food system that works for everyone.
