Our Impact

Climate Action │ Nutrition Security │ Social Justice

Since 2014, Denver Food Rescue has been building a more just and connected food system alongside neighbors across the city. From redistributing fresh, nutritious food to supporting community-led grocery programs, our impact goes beyond meals – it’s about dignity, equity, and creating lasting change together.

REPORTS

Here’s how we’re creating impact across three key areas:

Climate Action

Food waste is a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions, but it doesn’t have to be. By recovering surplus food from grocery stores and retailers, we’re preventing food from going uneaten and reducing the climate impact of wasted resources.

By keeping fresh food out of landfills, we’re actively contributing to a healthier planet and a more sustainable food system.

Our Impact So Far:

🥬 5.2 million pounds of fresh food recovered

☣️ 4,200+ tons of methane emissions prevented.

🚲 1.3 million miles traveled sustainably with e-cargo bikes.

By keeping fresh food out of landfills, we’re actively contributing to a more resilient planet and sustainable food system.

Nutrition Security

Access to fresh, nutritious food is essential for thriving communities. We recover high-quality surplus food, focusing on fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein, and deliver it directly to community-led No Cost Grocery Programs (NCGPs) where it’s shared without barriers.

Every box of food we recover represents more than just a meal—it’s a lifeline for families juggling tight budgets, a tool for fostering health, and a tangible way to reduce food inequities across Denver. By centering fresh and nutrient-dense options, we help create sustainable access to the food people need to thrive

Our Impact So Far:

🥘  Distributed over 35 million meals worth of food to Denver families.

🥬  66% of the food we recover is fresh fruits and vegetables.

💵 Saved Denver families $15 million in grocery costs.

Together, we’re creating healthier neighborhoods by making fresh food accessible to everyone.

Social Justice

Food is about more than sustenance—it’s about dignity, culture, and community. Our No Cost Grocery Programs (NCGPs) are hosted and led by local organizations, schools, and community groups, ensuring food is distributed in a way that honors cultural preferences and fosters connection.

Our Impact So Far:

🫶   Supported 21 communities in creating barrier-free & culturally relevant food access for their neighbors

🧑‍🍳  Shared skills and confidence around nutritious food preparation with 120+ Denver youth (SAN)
